Dedicated to the kids of Kampong Tulloch and Rochester Park

Dear all, many thanks for your effort and support by adding new life and materials to this website. This was their Kampong Tulloch story as follow;

Do you still remember the only Grocery Shop 'Seng Seng' in No.988 Kampong Tulloch. The shop was operated by Mr Ong Teck Koon also known as 'Gemuk' and his spouse 'Nonya'. It was noted that there were only two Chinese family living in the Kampong. Apart from Mr Ong's family, there was also another Chinese family, 'Missy Ho' the Camp Nurse.

Reference from our Guest book
Mr Dahlan Abdullah @ David Ho was the son of Mdm Sarah Seet (Nurse). They resided in the Kampong from 1959 till 1972. Mdm Sarah Seet was known as 'Missy Ho' as mentioned above.

The Chinese living in Kampong Tulloch wishes to express their gratitude to all Malay 'Kawans' / residents of Kampong Tulloch for the protection rendered to their families and properties during the civil unrest and trouble times in Singapore history.

The children of SGR fondly remember getting free transport rides in military truck to Wessex primary school along Portstown Road.

Around the Kampong were Kumpung O'Carroll Scott and Kent theater, it was only 30 cents for a movie then.

Much was remembered of SBC Radio Broadcaster/cooking show, Asma Laili who was married to Cpt Wan Chik. Madm Asma was a popular celebrity in the Kampong.

(Tuan Talib's photo .... finally arrived)

I would love to contribute an article about my childhood in the kampung, but I am afraid that I am not much of a writer and don't know where to start. We lived in Block A17 and later moved to Block B4 which was next to Seng Seng grocery shop. Yes, we have a few favorite places to play and hang around the grocery shop belongs to Stanley@Bobak's parents. They (Ah Moi @Liza, Ah Teng @Serene and Bobak @Stanley) never failed to visit us every Hari Raya. Also a funny story about Sgt. Borhans kids chasing after their cow, David recalled the incident more than me and we laughed insanely whenever he tell that story.

Most looking forward event is shooting exercise in the army boys scout and camping. We used point 22 rifle, a bit primitive but hey its pretty good to get a chance to crack at a real rifle instead of "senapang kayu". I remember one time Cpt. Mansfield allowed us to join a company to do army exercise at Pulau Tekong Besar, boy that was fun. Marching in behind the soldiers in the kampung where the villagers would look at us as if we were some kind of a hero.

Life as a kid is pretty tough, money is scarce as my dad is only a private and get paid $17.35c per week. My father told me a few years before he passed away that I cried when I asked him for money to go to school, he just couldn't say anything as he himself have no money. Talk about pride, oh boy that must be tough for him. I walk to school everyday from Kg. Tulloch to Clementi Primary School, its at least 4-5 kilometers one way. My mum make "kueh" and my dad would sells them at the camp to make end meets. Pasar malam was on every Thursday night, the next morning about 06.00 AM before they sweep the street I would walk up and down first to look for loose change that people dropped and whatever is eatdible, rambutan, mangoestine etc.

We live in an SGR married quarters, its a barrack not an attap house. My mum was a member of woman's club, but I am not sure if she also shoot as she never talk about it. I know they go around to visit places of interest, like old folks home, factories, orphanage things like that.

I was dutied to look after my dad's uniform including polishing shoes, belts and whatever he wants me to get things ready.

Well Kit, it will be good if we can get together as someone else would be able to chip in with their stories. (article dated 15 May 2014)

The following contributions from Mr Nordin bin Talib. They had a gathering with SGR Camp nurse "Missy Ho" daughter Aileen and Aileen's husband. Aileen and her husband now lives in Canada and were in Malaysia for holiday. Mr Nordin fondly remembered that Aileen, Salleh and him went o the same primary school from primary 1 to primary 6.

In the above picture with the backdrop of KL skyline were (from right to left) Salleh, Daniel the husband of Aileen, Aileen, Nordin and Mat Din (Dato Mohammad Din).
In the above picture, the gentleman in blue is one of the surviving SGR personnel, Pte 8303 Ahmad bin Yasin also known as "Ahmad 303". His nickname came about because his British 303 rifle using 7.7mm caliber was coincidently his service number which also ends with 303.

Ahmad 303 served in SGR from 1960-1971. He is 83 years old and lives in Alor Gajah, Malacca. For those who knew Dato Mohammad Din bin Yusoh, he is the brother in law of Ahmad 303.

The photographs were contributed by Jarrod@Titi. There was Gemuk behind his shop counter. Ah Seng the Shop Assistant with Gemuk's 3 children, Liza, Bobak and Titi. Gemuk's wife who was known to all as Nyoya..

Mr Nordin could fondly remembered Gemuk's family as his house was next to the Gemuk's shop and Nyoya was a kind lady. He giggled recalling the missing teeth when he saw the above image.

"The image was temporary removed to make space for other inputs."
